Optimal Allocation in Combinatorial Auctions with Quadratic Utility Functions

We discuss the optimal allocation problem in combinatorial auction, where the items are allocated to bidders so that the sum of the bidders’ utilities is maximized. In this paper, we consider the case where utility functions are given by quadratic functions; the class of quadratic utility functions has a succinct representation but is sufficiently general. The main aim of this paper is to show ...

Quorum Systems Constructed from Combinatorial Designs

A quorum system is a set system in which any two subsets have nonempty intersection. Quorum systems have been extensively studied as a method of maintaining consistency in distributed systems. Important attributes of a quorum system include the load, balancing ratio, rank (i.e., quorum size) and availability. Many constructions have been presented in the literature for quorum systems in which t...

Constructing t-designs from t-wise balanced designs

We give a construction to obtain a t-design from a t-wise balanced design. More precisely, given a positive integer k and a t(v, {k1, k2, . . . , ks}, λ) design D, with with all block-sizes ki occurring in D and 1 ≤ t ≤ k ≤ k1 < k2 < · · · < ks, the construction produces a t-(v, k, nλ) design D∗, with n = lcm( ( k1−t k−t ) , . . . , ( ks−t k−t ) ). We prove that Aut(D) is a subgroup of Aut(D∗),...

Balanced Arrays from Quadratic Functions

There is a famous construction of orthogonal arrays by R.C. Bose (1947). The construction uses linear transformations over a finite field. We generalize this to use non-linear transformation instead of linear and a subset of vector space as their domains. We show here constructions of orthogonal and balanced arrays which are generated by a set of quadratic function.

Shrinkage simplex-centroid designs for a quadratic mixture model

A simplex-centroid design for q mixture components comprises of all possible subsets of the q components, present in equal proportions. The design does not contain full mixture blends except the overall centroid. In real-life situations, all mixture blends comprise of at least a minimum proportion of each component. Here, we introduce simplex-centroid designs which contain complete blend...
